What is it?

Shopping Search Engines are websites that specialize in providing shoppers the information they need to purchase.  They are sometimes called Comparison Shopping Engines because they typically can help the searcher find the product they want to purchase and then compare costs at various websites that sell it.

For examples of Shopping Search Engines, you can look at BizRate, Shopping, NexTag, Froogle, and Yahoo Shopping. 

If you sell products on your website, these websites may be an excellent source of traffic.  The Cost Per Click is typically considerably less than it would be on typical Pay Per Click.  In fact, a click from one of these sites is likely an ideal visitor.  For example, if someone clicks on your site from Shopping.com, what do you think they are doing?  Shopping?  Probably!

How does it work?

Most of these Shopping Search Engines require that you submit your products in a specific format.  They require the model number, manufacturer, your price, your url, etc.  Each of them typically has a unique format.  This requires you to create a unique file for each.  If you want to change any information, you will need to make the edits and submit a new file.
